The traditional birthstone for those born in August is the peridot (pronounced pear-a-doe). This stone is noted for its, primarily, lime green color. Although the peridot may sometimes be referred to as the “poor man’s emerald” because of its similar green color but less expensive cost, this birthstone has many noble qualities associated with it including love, truth, faithfulness, and loyalty. The stone is said to have abstract properties like fame, dignity, and protection and can be used to enhance prosperity, growth, and openness.

The favored signature lime green color makes this stone particularly popular for jewelry. Unlike most gems, a peridot’s composition includes iron, and the depth of green is based on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure.  Therefore, the color can range quite a bit. Peridots can be anywhere from a yellow-green to olive green, but the most valuable peridot is that of the iridescent lime green hue.

Whether the stone is used in a pendant, ring, or pair of sunglasses, the August birthstone will get you noticed. In honor of the peridot, here are a few of Legacie’s favorite picks for August.
