The traditional February birthstone is the Amethyst. Long thought to represent the qualities of wisdom, spirituality, sobriety, security, amethysts are also said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. Throughout history, amethysts were associated with royalty – in fact, amethysts have been found in ruins dating as far back as the ninth century, adorning jewelry, crowns, and breastplates. A large amethyst is among the closely guarded gemstones in the British Crown Jewels.
Purple in color, the amethyst is found in many locations with major deposits located in Brazil, Uruguay, India, Zambia and South Korea.
