Though it’s been almost three weeks since it made landfall, Hurricane Sandy is fresh in our minds with the aftermath still effecting our everyday lives in many ways. From crazy commutes to spotty power to devastated neighborhoods, Sandy has left her mark on New York and New Jersey which is proving to have a slow but steady recovery act. It is at this time, however, that citizens are pulling
together and lending a helping hand to those in need. Here are a few things you can take part in to help out those most affected by the storm:
Hope for New York is working closely with non-profit affiliates, church partners, local government officials, and national relief organizations to inform all of needs and volunteer opportunities in the affected areas of New York’s five boroughs. The Bowery Mission needs help now to sort and organize donations. You can RSVP here.
Have some free time this weekend? You can help out the residents of Staten Island on Sat. 11/17 and Sun. 11/18. Also, the hard-hit Rockaways are in need of some assistance and you can volunteer on Sat. 11/17.
Visit the Hope For New York site for a full list of volunteer opportunities.
We cannot forget about the many animals and animal shelters affected by the storms aftermath. Best Friends Animal Society details many ways you can assist on their site, including donation drop-off information.
Can’t commit the time, but would still like to assist with the recovery? Their are plenty of other opportunities available for you to make an impact. The New Jersey Sandy Relief Fund is open for those who wish to donate to the recovery cause. No matter the amount you can give, it is sure to be extremely helpful for those in need of help in the New Jersey areas most affected by the storm. The American Red Cross is also actively working to provide funding assistance to those in need. Visit their site to donate to the cause.
You can also pull together with a group to collect much needed materials for distribution. With winter upon us, the need for winter coats has drastically increased in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Host a coat drive with your corporate group, civic group, or even as an individual through New York Cares. This is one way that BR|LGC has decided to lend a helping hand! Visit New York Cares site for more information on how to participate now through December 31st.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America are also taking part in the relief effort along with the Tory Burch Foundation and Vogue for Fashion for Sandy Relief. On Friday, November 16th, Fashion for Sandy Relief will hold a 50% off designer sale – featuring over 80 top designers – from 10am to 8pm at the Metropolitan Pavilion (123 West 18th Street in the Metropolitan Suite). All proceeds will benefit the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City and the Tri-State Area. Head down to the Metropolitan Pavilion TOMORROW to shop for a good cause!
There are many ways you can help out those in need. Visit Feeding America, Convoy of Hope, Direct Relief International and Rebuilding Together – just to name a few – for more opportunities.
